Combat and missions expose soldiers to many life-threatening situations. Unfortunately, these horrible experiences are carried into memory by many of our veterans.
When it comes to providing care for American heroes, it is essential to understand what they have gone through. With this understanding, we are opening up to more inclusive solutions that address painful memories from their past.
Horrific and life-threatening experiences can lead to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. Anyone dealing with PTSD gets their lives disrupted to perform daily activities. They are also at increased risk for developing mental health concerns. Veterans with PTSD may have some difficulty returning to life after their service.
How common is this situation? The government has recorded affected veterans based on their service era. From the Vietnam War, recent records tally 15 of every 100 veterans with PTSD. During the Gulf War, 12% have been diagnosed with PTSD. Of the veterans who have served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, 11% to 20% have PTSD.
PTSD is real, and chances are, you know someone who experiences this condition.
