Difference Between Medicare and Medicaid Programs

If you’re new to the world of providing long-term care at home for senior loved ones, chances are you might be a little confused about Medicare and Medicaid.

As an organization dealing with Medicaid, Medicare and Home Care in Broward, Florida, we want to spread awareness of the difference between these programs to help families know their options and make better decisions for their aging relatives.

Medicare and Medicaid are two government-run programs. They are managed and sponsored by several branches of government and mainly serve distinct populations.

Medicare is an insurance system. Medical bills are reimbursed by trust funds that people insured have contributed to. It generally supports those over the age of 65, regardless of income, and it also assists younger handicapped persons and dialysis patients. It is essentially the same across the United States and is managed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a federal government entity.

Meanwhile, Medicaid is a government assistance program. It assists low-income persons of all ages. Patients are typically not required to pay any portion of the costs for reimbursed medical bills. Sometimes a little co-payment is needed. It is a federal-state partnership program so it varies from state to state.

Even if both of them are health insurance programs, an individual can still be eligible for the Medicaid Home Care program and Medicare program. Both can work together to offer you health insurance while also lowering your healthcare expenditures.
